Urinary incontinence in a dog. Where does it come from and how to treat them?

Urinary incontinence in a dog is the involuntary leakage of urine from the bladder. This condition has nothing to do with learning how to clean the home or the importance of the dog’s territory. A doggie who leaks urine does so without knowing it, losing control of the bladder. What are the causes of urinary incontinence in pets?

Urinary incontinence in a dog – causes

Involuntary leakage of urine can have many causes and may not always be associated with a serious illness. In most cases, treating urinary incontinence in a dog is quick and easy. However, there may be times when this condition is a symptom of a serious health problem. Therefore, it must never be taken lightly! What are the most common causes of urinary incontinence in dogs?

  • cystitis
  • male prostate diseases
  • hormonal disorders in castrated bitches
  • urolithiasis
  • kidney failure
  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • sequelae of injury
  • abnormal structure of the urinary tract
  • behavioral problems

Some of these reasons can be a serious threat to your pet’s health and life. However, even slight urinary incontinence caused by mild cystitis causes great discomfort for a pet – especially if he is trained to clean at home. A doggie who lets out urine will often lick the perineum and even try to clean a carpet or floor stained with urine.

How To Treat Dog Urinary Incontinence?

If our pooch regularly urinates, we should take him to the vet and thoroughly examine the pet. Blood, urine and ultrasound tests of the abdomen may be needed to diagnose the cause of this condition.

If the problem with urinary incontinence is due to hormonal disorders, the treatment will consist of supplementation of appropriate hormones. This procedure brings good and quick results, but must be used for the rest of the pet’s life. Cystitis will require antibiotics, and treatment for urinary stones will most likely involve changing your pet’s diet.

Not every condition that causes urinary incontinence in a dog can be treated. In this case, it will be necessary to put diapers on the dog. When using it, it is necessary to remember about the exceptional care for the hygiene of the pet’s perineum – neglect may lead to inflammation and chafing.
