Potatoes can be prepared in many delicious ways. Potato gratin, mashed potatoes, homemade fries … No wonder so many people like them! However, there are rumors that domestic quadrupeds do not digest them at all. How much truth is there in that? Can a dog eat potatoes?

What do potatoes contain?

The potato is a plant in the nightshade family – just like tomato, pepper, and eggplant. However, unlike these species, the edible part of the potato, the tuber, is underground. Potatoes are grown in almost every country in the world and are valued for their versatile use in the kitchen.

Contrary to popular belief, they have few calories – 100 g of boiled potatoes have only 75 kcal. They contain almost no fat and protein, but about 16% carbohydrates (mainly starch). They are also rich in minerals – potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium and phosphorus, as well as B vitamins, vitamins A, C, E and K. Easily digestible, high fiber potatoes can help with stomach ailments. They are also a good source of easily digestible energy. Can potatoes be included in a pet’s home diet?

Can a dog eat potatoes?

Potatoes are not harmful to pets – as long as they are not raw! Untreated tubers contain large amounts of solanine which can cause serious digestive disturbances in the pet. If you want to treat your pooch with potatoes, we must remember that they do not contain any additives. Salt, some spices, a large amount of fat and onion can cause severe poisoning in our client.

The high dose of carbohydrate potatoes can make dogs obese. Therefore, just like pasta and bread, potatoes should not be a frequent addition to a dog’s diet. However, occasionally giving your pet a cooked without salt or baked tuber can be a good diversion to your meal. However, we must remember that a dog is primarily a carnivore that needs a properly balanced diet based on animal products!
