Dog’s diet in winter – what should it look like?

Your dog’s diet should be properly balanced all year round, but in winter you should pay special attention to this. The dog should be given 1-2 meals regularly and at the regular times it is accustomed to. Food for a dog in winter should be more caloric, because his metabolism is much faster then than in spring or summer. Make sure you buy dog food with a good composition, free from artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. It is worth choosing food containing omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, probiotics and plant extracts.

You can increase the portions of your meals so that they provide your pet with enough energy to warm the body. The risk that the dog will gain weight during this period is lower, and even if he gains some weight, nothing bad will happen, because the fat tissue will help him withstand low temperatures better. If you are preparing your dog’s meals yourself, you can increase the amount of meat per serving, thus reducing carbohydrates. The protein and fat from meat will be much more valuable than carbohydrates.

What about the dogs outside?

For dogs sleeping outside, it is important that they get a warm meal at least once a day (if you feed your dog dry food, just add warm water to it). You may have noticed that your dog eats snow sometimes. This usually happens while playing. Snow is no substitute for your dog’s drinking, and eating it can lead to sore throat and sore throat. Remember to provide your pet with constant access to warm (not hot!) Water in winter. For domestic dogs, the temperature of food and water is not very important, but for dogs outside it is important that they keep warm in this way.

Fats play a big role in a dog’s winter diet. You can add a tablespoon of oil or olive oil to your meal. Thanks to this, the dog’s coat becomes more greasy and therefore more resistant to the penetration of moisture, which leads to heat loss. Rain or snow will run down on it. To provide your dog with the right amount of fat, you can also buy special preparations at a pharmacy or pet store. Winter is a difficult time for dogs, especially those who live near the house, in the kennel. Do not neglect your care during this time and make every effort to help them survive this period as well as possible.
